Pattern Overview
This beanie is super basic and beginner friendly – honestly it is a great gift because it will look super fancy and advanced but uses only a couple of basic stitches and is made in a rectangle. I have made a bunch of these hats in both sizes for christmas presents this year. It is super easy to customize to have a more fitted or slouchy look, and to fit different head sizes by adding or removing rows as you work. Another reason this hat makes a great gift is that it is very horizontally stretchy – meaning it will accommodate a variety of head shapes and sizes without modification. It is also easy for the wearer to adjust the hat to their liking by folding the brim.
This pattern allows you to create a cozy and adorable hat with just single and half double crochet stitches!
Alternating back loop and front loop only rows creates the ribbed look with less bulk because all of the ribbed texture is on the same side of the finished product.
I have two sizes written out here, but honestly, it is super easy to customize. If you want it to be longer you just add extra stitches to the foundation row, and if you want it to be a larger circumference just add additional rows as you work.
Supplies Needed
- 8mm crochet hook
- Approximately 1 skein of bulky (weight 5) yarn (around 110 yards)
- I personally love using Loops and Threads Charisma yarn, and it takes exactly 1 skein per hat. I have also used Premier Yarn Serenity Chunky and it works very well also.

Stitches and Techniques Used
- Single crochet (sc)
- Half double crochet (hdc)
- Foundation half double (fhdc) and foundation single crochet (fsc) – these are super simple and a great way to get a nice stretchy edge, but you could also substitute with a foundation chain that is turned and then the stitches worked
Pattern Instructions
Adult medium
This is typically the size I make for women or those with smaller heads.
*Note* All of your single crochet stitches should be worked on the same “end” of the rectangle, so pay attention to that and make sure that you are working the single crochets into single crochets from the previous row.
Using your 8mm hook:
Foundation: Fhdc 24, fsc 3. ch 1, turn (27 stitches)
Row 1: In the back loop only, work 1 sc in each of the next 7 stitches, then 1 hdc in each of the next 20 stitches. (27 stitches)
Row 2: In the front loop only, work 1 hdc in each of the next 23 stitches, then 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches. (27 stitches)
Rows 3 -32: Repeat rows 1 & 2, alternating back loop only and front loop only rows. All of you back loop only rows should be worked on one side of the work.
Once you have a total of 32 rows, (or however many you want for your desired circumference), fold the piece in half with the long row sides together, with the right side of the piece together. Join with whatever method you prefer, I recommend using single crochet stitches on the half double crochet stitches and then slip stitches on the single crochet portion.
Then use the same yarn to gather the top together and secure with several stitches.
Weave in your ends, and then you can add a pom-pom if desired! I love to use a pom pom for a little extra flair and these look great with a yarn pom or a fur pom!
Adult large
This is the size I typically make for men, or those with larger heads or who want a more relaxed and roomy fit. It follows the exact same steps as the other hat, just with different stitch counts
*Note* All of your single crochet stitches should be worked on the same “end” of the rectangle, so pay attention to that and make sure that you are working the single crochets into single crochets from the previous row.
Using your 8mm hook:
Foundation: Fhdc 26, fsc 3. ch 1, turn (29 stitches)
Row 1: In the back loop only, work 1 sc in each of the next 6 stitches, then 1 hdc in each of the next 23 stitches. (29 stitches)
Row 2: In the front loop only, work 1 hdc in each of the next 26 stitches, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. (29 stitches)
Rows 3 -32: Repeat rows 1 & 2, alternating back loop only and front loop only rows. All of you back loop only rows should be worked on one side of the work.
Once you have a total of 32 rows, (or however many you want for your desired circumference), fold the piece in half with the long row sides together, with the right side of the piece together.
